Alexa, Amazon’s smart assistant, has plenty of integration with third-party services. Each of these services or functions, even included ones, are known as “skills.” Until today, however, it wasn’t possible for third-party skills to send notifications to any of your Alexa-powered devices. That’s now changing. Amazon has announced an opt-in program for developers to allow notification support in their services.

Thankfully, your Echo won’t just start blurting out notification information. Instead, users will be notified by the blinking LED light on the device as well as a sound to alert you. If you have a notification, you can then ask, “Alexa, what did I miss?”

Amazon says that it will not permit notifications that contain advertising, and notifications should be used “sparingly,” so that users don’t become annoyed by an endless barrage of notification sounds or annoying promotions.

See also: Amazon Echo Show review

Some apps, such as Domino’s and AccuWeather, already feature early notification support. The interesting thing here is, Amazon is allowing notifications to deliver personalized responses to the person speaking. So in theory, you should be able to get customized notifications based on your preferences, and not just generic responses.

It’ll probably be awhile before your favorite Alexa service gets updated with notification support, though it’s great to see Amazon enhancing Alexa’s already increasing abilities. They’re showing that Alexa isn’t a short-term investment, but a long-term product that is growing and changing.

Former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Barcelona striker, Samuel Eto’o, has denied the report that he paid for tickets for Cameroonian immigrants back to Libya.

The former Cameroon striker, while refuting the claims, said the ‘rumor is profoundly unfounded’

He wrote:

“Several sites have circulated a rumor that I would have given money to every migrant returnee, in relation to a topical issue. This rumor is absolutely unfounded!

“I would therefore take advantage of this opportunity, dear brothers and sisters, to emphasize that love prevents more evils than money can solve.

“So let’s not waste our precious time looking for thrills at the expense of grieving people, but let us use this time to prevent other brothers from being deprived of their dignity.

“Let us not just react when we can prevent, because among these victims are certainly people who have been our neighbours at some point, but to whom we have not daigné to look kindly.

“Let us build our Africa by having a positive impact on each other!

ZTE has confirmed that the Axon 7 is no longer being manufactured. The news comes via a Reddit user that spoke to one of the Chinese OEM’s customer service representatives and was apparently told that while the mid-range device “could become available in the future,” it is “currently end of life”.

According to the user’s full chat log with a ZTE rep: “As of now, The Axon 7 Ion Gold and Quartz Gray will not be available for sale going forward.”

If your memory is a little hazy, the Axon 7 launched in mid-2016 and quickly become a favorite of ours here at Android Authority. Its premium metal design, front-facing HiFi speakers, and overall impressive price-performance ratio led many to dub the phone a true “flagship killer”.

Various Axon 7 models debuted in the following months, such as the Axon 7 Mini and Axon 7s, but ZTE’s next major Axon-brand release was the Axon M – a bold, dual-screen phone that couldn’t quite deliver on its ambitious initial premise of a foldable future due to underwhelming specs and a general lack of utility for the second screen.

Editor's Pick

Over a year on from the Axon 7’s initial release and there has been no sign of a direct successor. Thankfully though, we already know a follow-up is all-but-guaranteed.

Just a few weeks ago, a Twitter user contacted ZTE’s official account hoping for a small hint that another mid-tier delight is in the works. Surprisingly, ZTE responded, stating: “There will certainly be a follow on to the incredibly successful Axon 7.”

- Lai Mohammed says the president is more focused on delivering his campaign promises and does not want to be distracted about re-contesting election

President Muhammadu Buhari has given clues that he will seek re-election in 2019.

However, the president on Tuesday, November 28, in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire where he is attending the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit, gave a hint that suggests he would likely run for another term.

According to Premium Times, Buhari who arrived late to an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Cote d’Ivoire Tuesday night, told the gathering that he had to wait for the two governors to accompany him to the meeting because of their electoral value.

“First I want to apologise for keeping you for too long sitting, this is because I insisted on the governors attending this meeting.

“This is why I came along with them so that when we are going to meet you, when you are going to meet the rest of Nigerians, if you tell them that their governors were in the company of the president, I think that will be another vote for me in the future. I’m very pleased that they were able to turn up,” Buhari said to the audience.

Meanwhile, the minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, has said President Muhammadu Buhari is more focused on delivering on his campaign promises and does not want to be distracted about re-contesting election in 2019.

The minister on Tuesday, November 28, told the Leadership newspaper in Abuja that Buhari was more committed to fulfilling his election promises to Nigerians and does not want to be distracted by politics.

Thai authorities have fined two American tourists for public indecency for posing for a “butt selfie” in front of a famous Buddhist temple, police said on Wednesday.

The two, who police identified as Joseph Dasilva, 38, and Travis Dasilva, 36, were arrested late on Tuesday at an airport in the capital, Bangkok.

They were each fined 5,000 baht ($154) for baring their buttocks for a picture taken last week at Bangkok’s Wat Arun, or Temple of the Dawn. “The two American citizens have admitted taking the picture,” district police chief Jaruphat Thongkomol told Reuters.

While Thailand has a reputation for racy night life, the predominantly Buddhist country is deeply conservative and revealing clothing is frowned upon while public nudity is considered offensive.

The two men had an Instagram account called traveling_butts which showcased similar selfies taken at tourists sites around the world. The account had more than 14,000 followers but on Wednesday it had been deleted.

Jaruphat said the two would also be fined for a similar picture taken at another temple in Bangkok.

They were being held at an immigration detention center while police considered a possible violation of Thailand’s Computer Crime Act, as the photograph was uploaded online, Jaruphat said.

- President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to bring home all Nigerians stranded in Tripoli and reduce illegal migration to Europe

- He said that information available to him shows that only three of the 26 migrants who died in the Mediterranean

- He said his administration will ensure the country is more conducive in order to discourage youths from embarking on risky trips out of the country for greener pasture

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, November 28, in Abidjan declared that all Nigerians stranded in Libya and other parts of the world will be brought home and rehabilitated.

In a statement by his senior special assistance on media, Garba Shehu, the President while speaking when he addressed Nigerians in the Diaspora, vowed to reduce the number of Nigerians heading for Europe illegally through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea by providing basic social amenities such as education, healthcare, and food security at home.

In an interactive session with members of the Nigerian Community in Cote D’ Ivoire, on the margins of the 5th AU-EU Summit, President Buhari said all necessary steps will be taken to stem the tide of illegal migration by Nigerians.

READ ALSO: Buhari ordered AGF Malami to meet with me, ensure my reinstatement, Maina alleges

He, however, noted that it is very difficult to know the origin of the people who died, while attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean, because of lack of documentation.

“When it was announced that 26 Nigerians died recently in the Mediterranean, before they proved that they were all Nigerians they buried them.

“But the evidence I have from the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs, (Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa) is that only three of them were identified as Nigerians. But I’ll not be surprised if the majority of them were Nigerians.

“For people to cross the Sahara desert and Mediterranean through shanty boats… we will try and keep them at home. But anybody who died in the desert and Mediterranean without documents; to prove that he is a Nigerian, there is absolutely nothing we can do,’’ he said.

Reacting to a recent footage on the sale of Africans in Libya, President Buhari said it was appalling that “some Nigerians (in the footage) where being sold like goats for few dollars in Libya.’’

‘‘After 43 years of Gadhafi, why are they recruiting so many people from the Sahel including Nigerians? All they learned was how to shoot and kill. They didn’t learn to be electricians, plumbers or any other trade,’’ he said.

On domestic issues, President Buhari told Nigerians in the Diaspora that there is ‘‘good news from home’’ in the area of security, economy and anti-corruption.

“We are not doing too badly in trying to secure the country, improve the economy and deal with corruption.

“We are doing our best at all levels including security. It is absolute madness for people to blow others up in markets, churches, and mosques. No religion advocates violence. Justice is the basic thing all religions demand and you can’t go wrong if you do it,’’ he said.

On food security, the President said that his vision of repositioning Nigeria as a food-secure nation is on course as the country is on the verge of attaining food security.

He attributed the development to positive agricultural reform programmes and bumper harvest occasioned by good weather.

According to the President, interventions through the Anchors Borrows Programme of the CBN and the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative, among others, had been very successful in the agricultural reform initiative.

“People have gone back to the farm. We got the CBN, agriculture minister and money was provided at very low interest to farmers and the farmers responded and it was very positive.

“We are lucky that we are in a position to feed ourselves. So we are going to have food security in Nigeria earlier than anybody ever thought,’’ he noted.

The President advised Nigerians in Cote D’ Ivoire to be good ambassadors in their host country, warning that the Embassy will not hesitate to repatriate those who tarnish the image of the country abroad.

According to The Information, which broke the story yesterday, Rubin had an “inappropriate relationship” with a female colleague while working at Google and left the company shortly after it had been investigated.

Google reportedly looked into the situation in 2014 following an employee complaint regarding Rubin’s relationship. Like many companies, Google has a policy which forbids relationships between supervisors and subordinates, and The Information confirmed that the person who made the complaint was working in Rubin’s Android department while he was at Google (the nature of the complaint, however, wasn’t discussed).

The website also said that its sources, who wished to remain anonymous, indicated that the “internal investigation concluded that Mr Rubin’s behavior was improper and showed bad judgement.”

While not necessarily denying the relationship, Andy Rubin’s spokesperson, Mike Sitrick, told The Information that “any relationship Mr. Rubin had while at Google was consensual.” Sitrick also added that “Mr Rubin was never told by Google that he engaged in any misconduct while at Google and he did not, either while at Google or since.”

Following The Information‘s initial contact with Sitrick regarding the story, Essential employees were told that Andy Rubin would be taking leave from the company for “personal reasons.” For how long Rubin will be away from Essential is unclear, but his departure arrives at something of a critical time for the startup.

After delays, the Essential Phone started shipping around the end of August for $699, but it soon its price slashed permanently to $499 (a move which was linked to poor sales). As a premium product from a new company, the Essential Phone’s success could decide the business’s fate; Rubin’s leave ahead of the crucial holiday period could cost Essential dearly.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that information available to him shows that only three of the 26 migrants who died in the Mediterranean and were buried in Italy recently were Nigerians.

He, however, said he would not be surprised if a majority of the deceased were Nigerians. Buhari said this during a meeting he had with members of the Nigerian community in Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday evening in Abidjan.

The President is in the country for the 5th European Union/African Union Summit. He promised that his administration will do all within its powers to make the country more conducive in order to discourage youths from embarking on risky trips out of the country for greener pasture.

He said efforts would be made to ensure that there will be less Nigerians daring the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea and getting perished.

Buhari said, “It was announced that 26 Nigerians died but before they could proved that they were all Nigerians, they were buried.

“But the evidence I got from my Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs now is that only three were identified as Nigerians. But I won’t be surprised if the majority of them were really Nigerians.

“For people to cross the Sahara Desert to go into shanty boats across the Mediterranean Sea, I think we will try and keep them at home.

“But for anyone who dared the desert and the Mediterranean without document to prove that he/she is a Nigerian, there is nothing we can do, absolutely nothing.

The nominee of President Muhammadu Buhari for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Bello Mahmud, from Zamfara state has been rejected again by the Senate.

This is the second time Mahmud would be rejected by the upper legislative chamber.

It was learnt that when the issue came up during plenary after a senator, Kabir Marafa’s point of order, his colleagues rejected his arguments and two prayers.

The leadership of the Senate told Marafa that it can only refer the issue to a committee of the chamber.

Saraki said the issue is supposed to be handled by a committee and it was unanimously adopted.

- Bolaji Abdullahi narrates an encounter Goodluck Jonathan had with an unnamed cleric before the 2015 election

- Senate president, Bukola Saraki, alleges that the reason foreign nations are reluctant to return looted funds to Nigeria was because of the bad management of them

The national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has narrated how an unnamed cleric advised former president, Goodluck Jonathan, to pull down the “altar of Baal” in his government.

READ ALSO: Breaking: Top Boko Haram commander arrested in Borno as soldiers rescue 212 victims

Abdullahi made the disclosure in an advanced copy of his new book, On a Platter of Gold, which will go on sale nationwide from November 30, 2017, after the launch, The Cable reports.

The APC chieftain, who served as minister under Jonathan from 2011-2014, stated that the event happened before Jonathan unsuccessfully sought a second term in 2015.

According to Abdullahi’s narration: “One day, a man of God went to see President Jonathan. God had sent him to minister to the president, he said. He opened to the book of Judges and read to him from 6:11. The president followed from his own copy of the Bible.

…That night the Lord said to him (Gideon), “Take your father’s bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it and build an altar to the Lord your God on top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order…

“‘Mr. President, God has put you here for a purpose. But you cannot fulfill the purpose, unless you “pull down the altar of Baal” around you first. There are some things you need to deal with before you can achieve your vision for Nigeria,’ the man of God concluded.

Jonathan agreed. He had also never ceased to wonder at his own incredible story. How from a humble lecturer, he became a deputy governor and then governor. Without having to move a muscle, he became vice president and then the president of the most powerful black nation on earth. Within a decade, he had come a long way in such a short time. ‘You are right. Even me I know. But I don’t know what shrine God wants me to demolish."

PAY ATTENTION: Read the news on Nigeria’s #1 new app

“The man of God closed his Bible and stood up. He had been a little taken aback by Jonathan’s code switching. He was talking about altar; the president was talking about shrine. ‘Mr. President, if you still don’t know what altar to pull down, then you need to ask God."

Abdullahi said what Jonathan did next might never be known, but concluded that the “altars of Baal” metaphor was apparently a reference to the perceived corruption in the administration.

“We may never know if President Jonathan spoke to God as advised, and if indeed God told him what to do. But as the Archbishop of Canterbury Walter Reynolds preached in 1327, ‘Vox populi, vox Dei’. Almost all through his tenure, Nigerians had made it known, loud and clear, which altar they wanted him to pull down – the altar of corruption,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has alleged that the reason foreign nations are reluctant to return looted funds to Nigeria was because of the bad management of them.

The Punch reports that the Senate president made these remarks at the ‘Strategic Retreat on Tracking the Progress of Anti-Corruption Bills in the National Assembly’ in Abuja on Tuesday, November 28.

Saraki alleged that proceeds of corruption recovered by the government were being looted by anti-corruption agencies which was affecting return of foreign loots.

He said the National Assembly was focused on the issue of corruption and addressing the problem. He said every bill passed was tilted towards how the National Assembly would contribute to the fight against corruption.

Saraki said President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment towards the fight against corruption was not in doubt.

Budget phone-maker BLU Products is in hot water with consumers after inadvertently bricking one of its devices via an OTA firmware update. Owners of the Life One X2, an affordable Android handset launched last year, have flooded Reddit after finding that their newly-updated phones are now completely useless.

Users on both the Android and IntoBlu subreddits have noted that the catastrophic bug occurs once the $200 device has rebooted after accepting BLU’s official update. While everything apparently seems okay at first, the phone then asks for the user’s password to finish the update.

The problem? The phone outright refuses to accept the password, effectively locking out any kind of functionality. Unsurprisingly, the fact that such a significant bug made it through to a final update has angered a vast number of Life One X2 owners.

The bad news doesn’t stop there, however. Several Reddit posters mention that they have called the Miami-based company regarding the issue. After waiting in line for a customer service representative, those same users have reportedly been told by BLU that the best solution to their woes is a full factory reset.

Editor's Pick

This suggestion hasn’t gone down very well, as many of those impacted are (quite rightly) unwilling to delete all of their data to fix the problem. To make matters worse, some Life One X2 users who did decide to follow BLU’s advice are reporting that they are still locked out of their phones.

BLU has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but it is responding to queries on Facebook. In a number of replies to disgruntled Life One X2 users, BLU has said that it is “currently investigating and trying to fix the issue,” and has apologized “for the inconvenience”. One Reddit post also suggests that BLU is working on a remote fix.

For the time being, the best advice seems to be a simple one: If you’re a Life One X2 owner, do not update your device until the issue has been resolved. We’ll keep an eye on this one and update this post when more details emerge.

The newspaper review for Wednesday, November 29, leads with Nigeria governors response to news that President Buhari asked them to clear backlogs of salaries among other stories.

The Nation reports that a row broke out yesterday over the President’s directive to governors on workers’ salaries.

Governors said President Muhammadu Buhari did not say they should pay all arrears of salaries before Christmas.

READ ALSO: Buhari ordered AGF Malami to meet with me, ensure my reinstatement, Maina alleges

After a meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday, President Buhari directed Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to release the balance of the Paris/London Club refund to states to enable them pay salaries.

Governors Rochas Okorocha (Imo) and Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) briefed reporters on the outcome of the meeting.

Yesterday, the governors denied that the President said they should pay all arrears of workers’ salaries before Christmas.

Besides, a statement by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum secretariat said given the delay in the past between when the President gave a directive and the actual release of funds, the money might not get to the states before Christmas.

This might have set a stage for a battle between the governors and workers.

A Labour leader, Comrade Isa Aremu, said last night: Any governor who fails to pay workers before Christmas will be voted out.”

The statement said: “The governors had expressed profound gratitude to the President for his magnanimity in hearkening to the needs of the states and understanding with them towards helping to solve some of the intractable financial problems of governance, top among which is the lingering problem of workers’ salaries.

“They pledged, therefore, to rise up to the occasion collectively, as a mark of their respect for President Muhammadu Buhari and empathy for the workers by paying before Christmas, once the Finance, the Budget and Planning Ministries and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disburse the monies owed them, as instructed.”

The Nation newspaper

Vanguard reports that 36 governors under the umbrella of Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, yesterday, denied reports that President Muhammadu Buhari gave them an order to pay workers their salary arrears before Christmas.

Meanwhile, there was a discordant tune between the Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, and Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State on whether President Buhari ordered those salary arrears should be paid before Christmas.

50 percent Paris Club balance, El-Rufai said the Paris Club refund was not enough to offset the salary arrears especially for states that were owing as there was no additional money to be given to such states apart from their fair share of the refund.

This came on a day that some governors said they were not owing salary arrears with the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC insisting that some governors are owing. While Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa said they were not owing, Governor Rauf Aregbesola said he was not paying workers half salary and had been paying regularly what the state government agreed with workers.

The Guardian reports that millions of Nigerians risk health and economic consequences following Federal Government’s failure to meet deadline on importation of high sulphur (dirty) fuels.A communiqué jointly issued by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Economic Communities of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Commission, and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) noted that switching to low-sulphur diesel and use of cleaner vehicles would result in annual savings in health costs of about $6 billion in Sub-Saharan Africa.

At the ministerial meeting on promoting low sulphur fuel held in Abuja last year, governments in the ECOWAS sub-region had agreed that all imported fuel should meet 50ppm max, in line with the African Refineries Association (ARA) -AFRI4 specification by July 1, 2017.

Already, neighbouring countries like Ghana, which also signified interest in reversing the trend, has since raised its standards and begun importation of cleaner products.

In late 2016, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire agreed to ban importation of Europe’s dirty fuel, limiting sulphur from 3,000 parts per millions to 50ppm.

But almost a year after, Nigeria has continued to import the commodity to the detriment of its consumers, despite the release of new guidelines on petroleum products by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

Unless removed, sulphur, a natural component of crude oil, is retained in Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel. Its presence in petroleum products impairs the effectiveness of emission control systems and contributes to air pollution. The toxic substances in the fuel increase incidences of bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory tract problems, said Consultant Public Health Physician/Epidemiologist and former Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. Akin Osibogun.

Maina, who is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said this in a video sent to Channels Television.

He further claimed that while he was out of the country, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), paid him a visit during which he (Maina) told Malami about the N1.3tn.

“When this government came in, the President (Buhari Muhammadu) gave the nod that ‘go and sit down with Maina, I’ve given you the approval.’

“They sat down with me after the security agencies had cleared me. Nobody has ever taken me to court in Nigeria, I want Nigerians to know; I have never been taken to any court of law. I have sued all the security agencies that they are talking about and I have won, I have four court judgments.”

Maina said, “As soon as this current government decided to sit with me, after the meeting, I told them that I would not allow them to return to Nigeria without giving them a gift. I told them I will give them something and the Minister of Justice (Malami) laughed and he asked what the gift was.

“I gave him a document and said go here and here; that there is N1.3tn which they want to steal because they have been stealing every year. He was shocked and said it wasn’t possible but I told him that sir, with all due respect, could you try what I said?

The Punch newspaper

This day reports that the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, Tuesday accused anti-graft agencies of looting funds and property recovered from corrupt persons and said this untoward act was the major reason why foreign countries harbouring monies stolen from Nigeria had refused to return them to the country.

“The National Assembly has been strident about the opacity shrouding the management of recovered funds, which in many cases get re-looted by the agencies that investigated and recovered them,” he said while declaring open the Strategic Retreat on Tracking the Progress of Anti-corruption Bills in the National Assembly.

According to the Senate president, the foreign countries harbouring funds looted from Nigeria are reluctant to return such monies, over fears that the returned assets may be mismanaged.

He said: “Nigeria is finding it difficult to convince other nations to return funds looted from our treasury. This is because of the other nations’ exasperation over the management of returned assets. Only recently, Mr. President inaugurated a committee to audit all assets recovered by various government agencies.”

Saraki cited a motion last week, seeking to expand the scope of the investigation of the scandal of the re-instatement and return to the civil service of former Chairman of the Pension Task Team, Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, to include investigations of allegations that recovered properties had been re-looted by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“An ad hoc committee of the Senate, which is investigating some administrative infractions in the Executive, has discovered that many properties recovered from a fugitive from the law, have not been accounted for by the investigating agency,” Saraki said.
