Most people who take part in sports betting are eager to bet on the net outcomes of games, i.e., on the winning team (basketball, football, hockey,) or the winning player (a boxer, a tennis player, etc.) or push; however, at least 77% of players place bets using the handicap method. What is the meaning of handicap in sports betting and how does it work? Keep reading to find out.

The handicap option was first used in the 1940s of the 20th century. It was always possible to tell that certain strong teams had a clear advantage against some other weaker ones. When the weaker team happens to be the home team, most people will not want to bet against their team and would rather skip betting than risk losing money betting on their favorite team, and the bookies kept losing money. This is the situation that warranted the handicap option to change the odds and bring different results.

Meaning of handicap in betting

The handicap feature allows you even out the winning chances of competitors if one of them (the favorite) has an obvious advantage over the other (the outsider). In simple words, a handicap is the provision of benefits which is stated in the number (quantity) of goals, points, seconds, etc. This number may be an integer (mild handicap) or fractional (hard handicap). There is also a negative handicap (for the favorite), and the positive one (for the outsider).

The use of odds changes ratios, and this is the main feature of a handicap, which helps to increase winnings from bets.

When teams have a big difference in strength, and the bookmaker lowers the odds to a minimum, there is a high possibility that you will win the bet, but the potential profit will be way lower than usual, deterring the player. Winning only 15% on a bet is not so much, especially since the strong team can lose unexpectedly; this makes placing a bet on this kind of game too risky and discouraging.

One can use a little trick in such situation - it is clear that the bet will only be valid if your selected team wins, and a team will only win if it scores 1 goal more than the other one. So, we can say that the handicap bet (-1) on this team will not be a no-win. And what if the team scores 2 or more goals? The bet will be won, but the player will get at least 40% instead of 15%.

Let us imagine a basketball match between the Lakers and the Boston. The favorites are the Californians and the Celts are outsiders.

To align forces the office puts equal coefficients 1.95 in line F1 (-3.5) and F2 (+3.5), i.e., 3.5 points will be subtracted from the results of the Lakers, while 3.5 points will be added to the results of the Boston.

If the Lakers win by a score of 90-88, a person who played the handicap of -3.5 will lose. If the player had made the handicap on Boston, he will win since the result will be 90-91.5 in favor of them.

Zero handicap

If you are not sure about the victory of a team and you would like some insurance incase of a draw, then you should bet on zero handicaps "F1(0)". This means that in the case of a clear victory of the first team, you will win with the proposed ratio and in the case of a draw, the rate will be calculated by a factor of 1. However, if the second team wins, you will lose.

You should not always play a negative handicap for favorites or, on the contrary, constantly strengthen the position of outsiders. Handicap betting needs to be flexible. Let us say you know one tennis player in a tournament who has been performing badly for a long time, it is logical to bet against him and bet a handicap on the outsider. Or if your opinion does not coincide with those of the bookmakers, and you think that the game will not last long because there will be a huge defeat, you can place a minus handicap on the favorite!
