Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy Senate president of Nigeria, has insisted that the country, as currently constituted, is not working and needs urgent fixing.

Ekweremadu urged the different regions in the country to come together and agree on how to fix it.

Vanguard reports that the politician spoke at the opening session of 2017 annual conference of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) in Abuja.

He also came hard on President Muhammadu Buhari for refusing to implement the 2014 National Conference report.

According to him, the report is the most recent roadmap produced by every shade of opinion and group in the country.

He also revealed that President Buhari was yet to transmit the report to the National Assembly for legislative actions months after the Senate requested for it.

He said he was not comfortable that Nigerians are now dangerously split along ethnic, religious, and sectional lines, as he added that the gap is widening on a daily basis.

“As a nation, however, we have to tell ourselves the hard truth. Nigeria, as currently constituted, is certainly not working well.

“Nigerians are not only dangerously split along ethnic, religious, and sectional lines, the gap is widening on a daily basis.

“The trend of divisive verbal attacks traded by younger ones against one another’s ethnicities, sections, and religions on the social media on every matter do not also inspire hope of a brighter future.”

“Therefore, I believe the constituent parts of this country must come together around the table immediately to discuss and agree on how to fix the country.

“I also believe that the 2014 National Conference report is a starting point,” he said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that southeast and southsouth governors recently met to discuss the need for the federal government to increase revenue allocation to states in the zones.

It was gathered that the governors urged the federal government to increase the allocation to reflect the current prices of crude oil in the international market.
